Stationary and Time Dependent Gross-Pitaevskii Equations (2006)

Organizers: Alberto Farina (CNRS Pauli, UPJV), Jean- Claude Saut (Orsay), Peter Markowich (WPI)

The Thematic Program will focus on the study of Gross-Pitaevskii equations, modelling superfluids at a temperature near zero and Bose-Einstein condensates, from the viewpoints of theory and applications. The Gross-Pitaevskii equations are nonlinear Scrhödinger equations (often) supplemented with non-standard boundary conditions at infinity. In the last decades, they have received much attention by the physicists community. Physical experiments, simulations and formal studies suggest the existence of special families of solutions (solitary waves) whose knowledge would enable us to understand the long time dynamics of general solutions and also to model various observed nonlinear phenomena such as the apparition of vortices in superfluids and analyse their dynamics. Due to the physical relevance of the considered models and to their applications it is of great importance to study, from a rigourous mathematical point of view, the problems of existence/non-existence of such a kind of solutions as well as their qualitative properties. It is the purpose of the proposed Thematic Program to bring together scientists from different research areas (mathematical and numerical analysis, mathematical physics) in order to stimulate interdisciplinary contacts, to solve open problems and to train young researchers.
