Preface

The 50th Séminaire Lotharingien de Combinatoire took place in

Domaine Saint-Jacques, 67530 Ottrott, France,

from Sunday, March 23, 2003 (evening) to Thursday, March 27, 2003 (afternoon).

This session being the jubilee celebrating the 50th meeting of the "Lotharingiens", we have added a day to allow for enough time for a condign celebration. Therefore participants were expected to arrive for dinner on Sunday and leave after lunch on Thursday.

The organizing institution was the University of Marne-la-Vallée (J. Désarménien, J.-G. Luque, J.-Y. Thibon).

On this special occasion, we had, exceptionally, a long list of main lecturers:

François BERGERON: Diagonal Alternants
Jean BERSTEL: Repetitions in Words : Recent Results and Open Problems
Mireille BOUSQUET-MÉLOU: The Ising Model on Planar Maps : A Combinatorial Solution
Philippe FLAJOLET: Analytic Urns
Dominique FOATA: The Lotharingian Impact on Combinatorial Mathematics: Myth or Reality?
Ira GESSEL: Rational Functions With Nonnegative Integer Coefficients
Adalbert KERBER: Idées universelles
Gilbert LABELLE: Generalized Binomial Coefficients
Alain LASCOUX: Schubert & Grothendieck: Un bilan décennal
Bernard LECLERC: Kazhdan-Lusztig Cells and Canonical Bases
Alun MORRIS: Projective Representations of the Generalized Symmetric Group
Peter PAULE: Contiguous Relations and Creative Telescoping
Dominique PERRIN: Unavoidable Sets of Constant Length
Helmut PRODINGER: Combinatorial Problems Arising From the Analysis of Algorithms
Volker STREHL: After Dinner Talk
Herbert WILF: Longest Increasing Subsequences in Pattern-Restricted Permutations
The contributed talks given were the following:
Eli BAGNO: Sign Balance for Invertible Matrices
Fabrizio CASELLI: Non-Negativity Properties of Kazhdan-Lusztig R-Polynomials
