Title: "\(C^{*}\!\)–algebras associated to topological dynamics and groups: classification results."
Speaker: Stuart White (University of Glasgow)
Abstract: The last few years have seen dramatic progress in the
classification of simple amenable \(C^{*}\!\)–algebras, leading to a
definitive classification theorem. In the talk, I'll try and explain what the definitive classification theorem says, how it relates to Connes work in the 70's and then discuss what this means in examples coming from groups, and groups acting on topological spaces. In particular in the case of group actions, trying to determine when the resulting \(C^*\!\)–algebras is classified has recently led to new prospectives on the underlying dynamics. Looking at the seminar programme, I realise that \(C^*\!\)–algebras aren't everyone's stable mathematical objects so I'll endeavour to keep the talk self contained.
