Details about the application

Please note:

  • Complete applications should be received by the deadline September 30, 2010. The Admission committee may choose not to review incomplete applications.
  • Application materials cannot be returned to a student.
  • All materials must be submitted to the address given above in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Vienna. Any other address will only delay the process.

Curriculum Vitae: In tabular form, an applicant provides her/his personal data such as address, date of birth etc. and her/his high school education and university training including all academic degrees earned.

Statement of Purpose: In this brief (1 - 2 pages) personal statement, the applicants should discuss their preparation, motivation, and goals for their proposed courses of study. The applicants should indicate their main research interests and the faculty member they want to work with.

Proficiency in German and/or English: All applicants must have a good command of English. If your first language is not English and you did not graduate from an University in an English speaking country, we ask you to provide proof of your ability to communicate in English in an academic environment (e.g., by sending your TOEFL test scores). For students whose native language is German, we initially require at least an ability to read in English. As students progress through their studies, we expect them to develop language proficiency to the point where they can attend and understand a talk delivered in English and give a talk in English themselves. This requirement provides our students with the opportunity to participate in mathematical exchanges with visiting scholars from across the globe and prepares them for an increasingly international academic and/or business career.

Letter of recommendation: Each applicant should include at least one letter of recommendation with her/his application materials. Each letter of recommendation should be placed in a sealed envelope with the signature of the recommender across the seal or emailed directly to Julia Cheng. Letters of recommendation in either form must be received by September 30, 2010, for an application to be considered complete.
