Abstract: By a two-step distribution we mean a subbundle H in the tangent bundle TM of a smooth manifold, such that sections of H and Lie brackets of two such sections span TM. We use methods derived from parabolic geometry to uniquely characterise generic two-step distributions, and prove results about their automorphism groups.
